As far back as I can remember, I’ve never wanted to work in a place where looks and outfits are fixed. I’m a fan of companies and professions that embrace freedom of expression and flexibility of style and fashion.
I really liked how clean my dad looked as an airline sales manager at his former job but for some reason, I’ve always wanted to work in a place that let me explore fashion in my own way – tshirts, blazers, kaftans, sneakers, heels, sandals and whatever the hell I want.
I like to be comfortable. I want to be able to focus on the work and the people around me without bothering about my boobs popping out or my outfit being too tight or my belly bulging. If you’re a big bodied baby girl like me, you’ll understand this better.
Now imagine my reaction when a former boss of mine told me it was disrespectful to come to work without makeup. I was shocked and uncomfortable and disappointed. I knew at that point I had to leave. This place was surely not for me.
It was at that point I had to reevaluate my choices and ask myself what really made me happy and what didn’t.
Are you comfortable where you work? Do your friends make you uneasy? Are you in situations that give you sleepless nights?
Identify your values and principles. Stick with it. Choose peace.
Of course there will be tough times and people along your way in life, but you’ll surely feel it in your soul when they’re not meant to stay.
I’m more than grateful I called it quits. Saying goodbye was one of the best days of my life.
